This isn't a poem, but an original short Easter story...
In a rural area in the Southeast, where farmland stretches for acres on end and animals are plentiful, a mom and dad were planning to get their young son his very first Easter pet.
The mom said to her 8 year old son, "Dear, you're getting older, and I think you can take good care of a pet now. Your dad and I would like to get you whatever you would like as an Easter gift. Would you like a dog or a cat?"
"I don't think so", replied the young lad.
The boy's father asked, "How about a nice Easter bunny or Easter chick?"
His son replied, "No, dad, I don't think that's what Easter's about."
The parents asked their son what he wanted for a pet, and to their surprise, he answered, "A goat".
"Why in the world do you want a goat for Easter?", the befuddled parents asked.
"Mom, dad, the other day in school, some of the bullies tried to get my friend Jim in trouble for something he didn't do. My teacher said that they were trying to make Jim a 'scapegoat'. On Easter Sunday, didn't Jesus 'scape from a tomb and become the goat for things he didn't do?" replied the son.
The mom and dad were amazed at his logic, and dad replied, "I suppose so".
Their son insisted, "Mom, Dad, I want a goat to love and take care of".
True to their word, the parents got their son a goat for Easter, and the the son took care of it until the day the goat died. The boy was now a teenager, but still cried as he laid the goat to rest. His mom and dad placed their arms around him to console him, but as he dried his tears, the young man said, "I know my pet is gone, but the Easter Goat lives on for us all..."
Have a joyous and blessed Easter!
